Industry Challenges

Challenges in Industrial Wafer Printing

Before we showcase the capabilities of industrial printing on wafers, it’s worth taking a look at the challenges manufacturers face every day. The market demands ever-greater personalization, shorter production runs, and products that stand out on the shelf—all without sacrificing production efficiency. Below are the most common issues our customers bring to our attention.

Scale of production

There are many solutions on the market that enable high-quality printing on wafers. However, the challenge arises when printing must be carried out on an industrial scale—with high production volumes, frequent design changes, and increasing pressure to meet tight deadlines.

Przyszłość druku przemysłowego: precyzja, piezoelektryki i pełna kontrola waveformu

Long changeover times

Short runs, limited editions, and frequent design changes require a high degree of production flexibility. Traditional marking methods often prolong production setup and order fulfillment times.

Consistent quality in every batch

Major brands expect the same results in every production batch. Even slight variations in print quality can lead to complaints and the loss of customers. Maintaining complete consistency is key to building customer trust.

Customization Options

Most of the available technologies only allow for simple, monochrome prints. Meanwhile, brands are increasingly expecting full-color designs with logosthat make the product stand out and enhance its brand recognition.

Production losses

The delicate structure of the wafer requires careful marking. Physical contact with the product (in stamping or screen printing processes) can lead to cracks, crumbling, and an increased number of production rejects.

The Search for a Competitive Advantage

In the competitive wafer market, personalization, attractive product design, and the ability to create custom designs are becoming increasingly important. These factors are what set a company’s offerings apart and help build a competitive advantage in the market.

Business Benefits

Food-grade printing isn’t just decoration
It’s a competitive advantage

In industrial production, it’s not enough for the print to look good. The process must be fast, repeatable, and sustainable at the plant’s actual production pace.

Single-Pass technology allows printing to be applied in a single pass as the product moves under a stationary printing section. Wafers can be marked continuously—without stopping production after each batch and without creating an additional, manual decorating step.

Our Solution

What are the benefits of IMAGO’s industrial printing technology for ice cream wafers?

New sales opportunities, greater production flexibility, faster project completion, and access to more profitable orders. IMAGO technology is designed so that wafer printing supports your business growth. Here’s what’s actually changing in your business.

Industrial Production Capacity

The CS Series single-pass printers enable full-color printing on wafers at a throughput of up to 30,000 pieces per hour. As a result, product customization does not limit production scale.

Consistent quality in every batch

An advanced printing system ensures consistent reproduction of colors, graphics, and details regardless of order size or production time.

Change the design in seconds

Whether it’s a new design, a seasonal campaign, or a private label, there’s no need for complicated setup changes. Simply upload a new file to start printing the next design right away.

Full-Color Product Customization

Produce colorful prints featuring logos, marketing graphics, and private-label designs perfectly tailored to your brand’s requirements in a single pass through the machine.

Minimizing Production Losses

The contactless printing process eliminates the risk of damaging the delicate structure of the wafer, helping to reduce waste and increase production efficiency.

Automatic Wafer Feeding

A dedicated feeder eliminates the need for manual intervention, ensuring stable production, high throughput, and precise positioning of each wafer during printing.

Fast production with no minimum order quantities

Produce short runs (starting at just 1 piece), private label projects, and limited editions without additional setup costs. The absence of printing plates allows you to change designs instantly, shorten order fulfillment times, and respond more quickly to customer needs.

Execution during the event

Each piece is unique

Your Benefits

A client approaches you with a promotional campaign scheduled for three weeks from now. They need wafers featuring a QR code, the campaign hashtag, and the event date. You accept the order with ease—because you don’t have to order new dies or wait for the prepress department. Each piece can feature a different message or code, and the entire run is ready on time. You handle orders that would take other manufacturers months to complete.

Your Benefits

Waffles featuring the birthday person’s name, a wedding date, a company anniversary logo, or a First Communion photo—these are orders that customers place a few days in advance and expect to be ready by a specific date. Digital printing allows us to accept such orders without minimum run requirements and ship the finished product on the same day it’s printed. A single machine can handle hundreds of different occasions simultaneously—every order is unique, every order is on time, and none requires downtime or retooling.

The food industry needs solutions that combine efficiency, precision, and reliability.

We demonstrate the types of products the IMAGO CS series can process and how automatic product feeding increases production efficiency and consistency.

INTUITIVE IMPLEMENTATION

Automation without plant retrofitting

The IMAGO Single Pass System automates wafer marking without taking up a large portion of the production floor and without requiring any modifications to the existing infrastructure. The compact machine can be positioned alongside the existing production line or as a standalone station. The machine does not require a power supply, compressed air, or a water connection, so setting up the workspace is simple, and standard installation can be completed within one business day. This minimizes downtime and allows for a quick start to the production of printed wafers.

Simple Operation

Greater efficiency without increasing headcount

Food printing is an automated decoration process that uses edible dyes on the surface of food products. It works similarly to the printer you’re familiar with from the office—with one important difference: instead of paper, you have a confectionery product, and instead of regular ink, food-grade inks approved for contact with food are used. In practice, this means that a design from a computer—a logo, photo, name, seasonal graphic, QR code, or collection pattern—can be applied directly to the product in full color and at photo-quality resolution.

PRODUCT COMPATIBILITY

A system designed around your wafer

Wafers can vary in size, shape, surface, and method of transport; therefore, IMAGO does not limit implementation to the sale of standard machines. Depending on the process, the system can be equipped with dedicated feeders, product-stabilizing guides, spacing modules, and solutions that integrate the printer with the existing conveyor system. We determine the configuration together with the person responsible for production to ensure consistent feeding, marking, and retrieval of wafers under actual plant conditions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions about technology differences, the implementation process or printing capabilities? We’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions to help you better understand how Sapphire differs from other equipment and how it can realistically support your production process.

No. The machine can operate directly on the production line or as a standalone station in a separate area. We select the configuration based on the plant’s layout and the method used to transport the wafers.

No. The system does not require the complex connections typical of many large industrial devices. This reduces the amount of preparatory work required on the customer’s end.

A standard installation can be completed within one business day, provided that the configuration is determined in advance and the work area is prepared.

No. Basic operations can be performed by a production worker after a brief training session. It is not necessary to hire a qualified printer.

Yes. In addition to operator training, IMAGO can provide advanced technical training for maintenance staff.

No. IMAGO devices enable high-quality full-color CMYK digital printing—from logos and branding elements to multicolor graphics and photos.

Yes. To change the design, you simply modify the file. There is no need to prepare a separate mold, screen, stamp, or die for each design.

Yes. At Proof-Lab IMAGO, we can run tests on the customer’s actual products, evaluate print quality, and prepare configuration recommendations.

The price of the machine is only part of the calculation. It’s also worth considering the costs of current labeling, operator labor, changeovers, mold and die preparation, scrap, and the ability to fulfill additional orders and introduce private-label or premium wafers. IMAGO helps you align this data with actual production volume and prepare a business case for a specific facility.
